Most of them were 'political prisoners', arrested because of their activities aimed at subverting the Germans. The women were from many different countries. Initially, there were also wards for Jewish prisoners and Gypsies. At the end of 1944, a gas chamber was built at the camp in which an estimated 5,000 to 6,000 were gassed.
